Government Engagement Committee Fosters Relationships With Key Agencies Worldwide

Rona Newmark

Member companies within The Green Grid operate in geographies around the world, exposing them to a wide range of resource efficiency regulation, legislation, and policy efforts that impact how they do business.

The Green Grid established the Government Engagement Committee (GEC) for two primary reasons:

  • To monitor specific government efforts that may affect any phase of the full product or data center life cycle
  • To develop long-term relationships with key government agencies, allowing them to see us as a voice of consensus for the information and communications technology (ICT) industry

In this way, the GEC provides another member-value service to The Green Grid companies – and to the entire ICT ecosystem.

The GEC builds on The Green Grid’s existing relationships with governments, regulators, industry trade groups, and industry advocacy groups to identify new efforts and emerging discussions.

The GEC’s focus starts with energy efficiency and regulations and programs, but we also contribute to numerous other resource areas. In cases where The Green Grid has relationships with regional industry associations, we work together to reinforce the global nature of our opinions. Examples of GEC focus areas include:

  • EU Code of Conduct
  • California Electric Commission investigation into energy efficiency requirements for data center equipment
  • ENERGY STAR specifications for data centers and data center equipment
  • Import standards for energy efficiency of IT equipment in Korea, Japan, and China
  • Energy reporting regulations

The GEC meets monthly to review the status of existing projects and to consider potential new projects. These meetings can result in, among other actions, new information about a new policy or regulation or in the development of recommendations to The Green Grid’s Board of Directors regarding the association’s role in the advancement of legislation, regulations, or standards.
