Data Center Automation With a DCIM System

The Green Grid’s DCIM Work Group is mid-way through completion of a white paper focusing on “Data Center Automation with a DCIM System,” a guide for individuals who need to proactively engage in maintaining uptime and ensure rapid deployment of data center services, desire an automated way to more accurately forecast capacity, and want to curb costs while assuring the highest levels of performance for their data center investments.

Given the strategic role data centers now play in an enterprise’s success, this topic has emerged as a front-and-center priority for companies looking to optimize the “journey” they must undertake in the evaluation process for selecting a data center infrastructure management (DCIM) system.

The white paper does more than describe the benefits of a DCIM system. A notable aspect of the white paper is that it presents how data center automation merges industrial control systems and predictive analytics to optimize networked asset utilization. It also introduces a general methodology for the planning and installation of a DCIM system with controls.

Moreover, this white paper lays out a DCIM framework for integrating the major functional components of a data center. These include both the traditional facility components and the information systems. To create the stage on which to illustrate the process, the following diagram was created to present the high-level functional overview of a DCIM framework and illustrates the various infrastructure components that need to be integrated to enable a holistic operational view of the data center.
