Thank you, members! You keep us going
Data is growing by the second. Ten years ago when we founded The Green Grid, energy costs were at all-time highs, power plants were mostly from high-pollution sources, providers like Enron were creating an unstable electricity market, major cities were experiencing power black-outs and brown-outs, and governments believed that data center energy consumption was 2% of all electricity and growing quickly.
The one thing that we could have accurately predicted was that things would change. Now, we are able to power data centers with wind and sun, and the U.S. government says that data centers are only 1.8% of electricity use, while data center aggregated compute and storage capacities have grown (conservatively) to more than 10 times the deployed total capacity of 2007.
Data analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, the Internet of Things (IoT), virtual reality, connected cars, and many other emerging technology trends are driving much more rapid growth rates in data storage and network demand. Imagining what may be around the corner, we can expect this demand to continue exploding.
So, as we reflect on the past and look to the future, I would like to take a moment to thank those who are accompanying us on this very interesting journey. Your participation keeps us going strong and enables us to develop innovative metrics, tools, and best practices to promote resource-efficiency and sustainability across the global information and communications technology (ICT) ecosystem.
