The Green Grid released Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Capacity and Utilization Metrics that data center owners/operators can use to track and communicate how ICT services are being consumed in the data center as a way to measure efficiency and effectiveness.

In this webcast, The Green Grid members Rona Newmark, Phil Isaak, and Jay Vincent provide an overview of the new metrics, including compute, memory, storage, and network elements, target users, and reporting, and explore how these metrics can be applied as:

  • A method to measure and assess the effective utilization of a set of data center ICT services and provide a simple indicator of used and available capacity
  • A common approach to reporting ICT capacity and utilization that helps senior management and business unit stakeholders understand output from their ICT expenditures
  • A guideline for IT organizations to better understand how ICT capacity is being consumed in their data center(s)
  • An early warning of problems that are preventing efficient deployment of ICT
  • A tool for assessing the efficiency of the ICT side of the PUE

Rona Newmark

Data Center Energy Efficiency

Rona Newmark recently retired from Dell EMC, where she served as vice president, Data Center Energy Efficiency.

In her role, Rona worked in two key areas: 1) products and strategies addressing data center energy efficiency and energy efficiency standards, and 2) company and industry efforts to view efficiency at the data center level to provide the best overall energy savings while meeting business results. She was on the Board of Directors of The Green Grid, where she served as an officer and participated in multiple committees and work groups.

Rona holds a BSCE from Case Western Reserve University.

Phil Isaak
Independant Consultant and Trainer
Isaak Technologies, Inc.

Phil Isaak is the founder and president of Isaak Technologies, an independent data center consulting firm. He is a professional engineer with more than 20 years focused solely in the data center industry. His experience encompasses data center facilities, network infrastructure, IT platforms, and services.  He has provided consulting and training to data center management, operations, and design professionals located in 23 countries across six continents. Phil has guided clients as they implement enterprise, colocation, and cloud service data center strategies. He has helped management contain capital and operational costs by developing capacity and operational budget forecasts over the life cycle of the infrastructure and data center services.

In addition to co-authoring several of The Green Grid white papers, Phil is one of the authors of the TIA-942 “Telecommunications Infrastructure Standard for Data Centers,” the ANSI/BICSI 002 "Data Center Design & Implementation Best Practices" standard, the “Data Center Handbook” published by Wiley Publishing, and the pending ANSI/BICSI 009 “Data Center Operations” standard.

Isaak Technologies provides data center focused facility and IT consulting services. Services include assessments, audits and certification, strategic planning, design, peer review, project management, vendor management, and data center personnel training in design and operations.

Jay Vincent
