Three current storage trends that will surprise you

The pace of change in storage has never been faster. From the mid-1990s to a few years ago, storage area network (SAN)-based disk systems doubled capacity every couple of years and got faster, but otherwise stayed the same. It was relatively simple to plan for the future. In 4 years, you could purchase one new storage system to replace 4 or 5 existing systems. All data was stored in the data center and was only left the data center to be mirrored to another site or backed up offsite for disaster recovery.

Today the world of cognitive and cloud produce requirements that couldn’t be foreseen just a few years ago. Disk systems which once stored most data in the data center are quickly being replaced by all-flash storage. More importantly, the idea that data stays in the data center is long gone. Most enterprises are storing some data in the cloud and that trend is going to continue to grow.

One of the biggest challenges faced by CTOs today is keeping up with the quickly-changing IT landscape. Now is the perfect time to get educated on the latest storage technologies at the IBM Technical University in Orlando, Florida starting May 22-26.

Here are storage trends that might surprise you when you attend

  1. First, all-flash storage is mainstream and is no longer a niche solution. Many people assume flash is just for a few use cases that require speed. But when you look at the current economics of storage, the roles of flash compared to disk have actually reversed.. It’s time to start thinking about flash first, and disk systems are becoming the niche for certain applications. In Orlando, you’ll learn more about why all-flash storage is the new default for storage solutions.
  2. Next, software-defined storage is critical for hybrid cloud deployments. When data was always kept in the data, center it was okay to store it in a “box.” The problem with putting data in a box is that it’s hard to get it out of the box. Software-defined storage changes everything. When you separate the software from the physical storage, the data is now free to move to where it needs to be. It can move to a different class of storage, a different site, or to the cloud. At IBM Tech U, you’ll learn how software-defined storage changes the game for storing data by breaking down the boundaries of where data can be stored.
  3. Finally, converged infrastructure solutions are becoming more popular. Most of us are used to a world where the data center is made up of storage, servers, and networking devices with an uncountable numbers of cables connecting them. Converged infrastructure solutions deliver all those capabilities in a single rack with a single management interface. This speeds application deployment and the ability to react to changing requirements. In Orlando, you’ll learn why so many IT organizations are adopting converged infrastructure solutions instead of the silos of storage, servers and networking that defined the data center for decades.
