With the influx of data and the need for organizations to act on real-time insights, in-memory databases such as SAP HANA are on the rise. To respond to that demand two years ago IBM Power Systems introduced a SAP HANA on Power solution. SAP HANA on Power Systems is recognized as a rapidly-growing platform for SAP and SAP HANA. The SAP HANA on Power solution has gained traction, netting over 600 clients in a short period of time across the Power portfolio.

For more than 40 years the IBM and SAP partnership has driven innovation and helped organizations with their digital transformation. The IBM and SAP partnership allows clients to leverage a low-risk, mission-critical journey to SAP HANA with IBM on board as a premier partner for development projects. Power Systems has established itself as a strong player and a trusted partner in the HANA space, focused on providing our clients with enterprise-grade flexibility, reliability, performance and support.

The path to the cloud

With the introduction of the Power Enterprise Systems for the Cloud last year, IBM now provides organizations with a new route to the cloud, including a new option for on-premises cloud environments. As SAP customers look to introduce SAP HANA in a cloud or cloud-like fashion, an on-premises private cloud is a robust option.

Organizations want to be able to capitalize on choice and utilize the benefits of both on premises and cloud environments. For example, many customers require or prefer sensitive or critical production SAP HANA workloads to be housed on premises for security and compliance reasons. But they still want to simultaneously utilize a low-cost flexible solution in a hybrid cloud environment. In response to SAP HANA clients asking for the option of a hybrid cloud environment, Power Systems has worked to create an end-to-end IBM Hybrid Cloud offering with IBM Global Technology Services (GTS).

Looking forward

IBM intends to support SAP HANA on IBM Power Systems in a hybrid cloud model. This IBM Hybrid Power Systems for SAP HANA offering is planned to be offered as a deployment option for IBM SAP on Power customers.  This intended offering will be the first all-IBM Power Systems Hybrid Cloud for SAP HANA, providing enterprise-grade attributes the industry expects from Power Systems – flexibility, resiliency and performance; and the flexible deployment options and high-touch support from IBM GTS Managed Hosting and Application Services for SAP.  The IBM Hybrid Power Systems for SAP HANA offering is intended to provide HANA customers with flexible, managed HANA environments to support SAP workloads with the goal of lowering time-to-value and infrastructure costs for HANA initiatives.[i]

With IBM Hybrid Power Systems for SAP HANA clients will have an additional path to move their organization to the cloud. They will have the ability to integrate their SAP HANA solution with both Power infrastructure and an IBM managed service – all in a hybrid cloud environment.
