For years, IBM z/VM® virtualization technology has provided high levels of extreme scalability and security, providing a robust foundation for infrastructure as a service on IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE servers.

While cloud computing has become the standard use model for IT services, an IT infrastructure is always the foundation for every IT service. Realizing the benefits of cloud computing requires an infrastructure that is not only secure and reliable, but can also easily adopt new functionality for improved infrastructure capabilities.

The recently announced IBM z/VM version 7.1 will enable continuous adoption of new virtualization capabilities.

Agility through continuous delivery

It’s one of the hallmarks of computer science to shorten time in the deployment and operations process, and continuous delivery is one practice enabling the deployment of new capabilities for production at any time.

Faster benefits with z/VM V7.1

With the z/VM Continuous Delivery model, clients get the flexibility of selecting and deploying new capabilities at their pace, along with moving from one release to another release in the new two-year cadence. They can be more productive, less stressed, and more focused on feature delivery rather than dealing with big, unknown potential changes.

In support of continuous operation, z/VM’s function for Live Guest Relocation of active virtual Linux servers to another system without interruption is integrated in z/VM V7.1.

Improved infrastructure capabilities

As IBM’s virtualization product for IBM Z and LinuxONE, z/VM continuous to expand its functional capabilities. z/VM V7.1. enables its virtual server to benefit from the new capabilities of the z14, Emperor II and Rockhopper II servers, allows for sub-capacity pricing, and enables continuous operation for continuous deployment. Additional improvements will help to save time and resources, improve security and improve the flexibility of the memory management. The detailed overview is available at the z/VM Continuous Delivery News page.

Summary

As a foundation of IBM’s infrastructure as a service on IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE, z/VM V7.1 is evolving in enabling the continuous adoption of new infrastructure capabilities to meet the needs of the IT organizations.
