SAP NetWeaver 7.5 now supports HANA 2.0 on IBM Power Systems little endian

If you are like me, you have been waiting with bated breath for SAP to add HANA 2.0 on IBM Power Systems to its Product Availability Matrix (PAM). Well, it finally did, starting with NetWeaver version 7.5. If you have an S-User ID with SAP, you can go to the website and look at the PAM.

SAP NetWeaver is the underlying computing platform for most of SAP’s modern software, such as SAP Business Warehouse (BW) and the entire SAP Business Suite.

SAP support for HANA 2.0 on Power, which is the version of HANA on Power that uses the little endian version of the SUSE version 12 operating system, was actually announced in November 2016. A lot of my clients have been waiting since then for HANA 2.0 on Power to show up in the SAP PAM for SAP software, and I’m very happy to announce that it is finally starting to happen.

I hope to see the SAP PAM updated for the SAP Business Suite to reflect support for HANA 2.0. You can still run SAP software, such as ECC6 EHP7 or EHP8, using HANA 2.0 according to SAP Note 2420699, “Release of SAP HANA Database 2.0 for older SAP Versions.”

Why HANA 2.0 on Power matters

What’s significant about HANA on Power now having a little endian version is that HANA on x86 appliances use little endian too.

That means that we can now move data seamlessly between HANA 2.0 on Power and HANA 2.0 on x86 because they are both little endian. Clients can use backup and restore or HANA Data Replication to move databases between x86 and IBM Power Systems, making it easier to replace scale-out HANA x86 appliances with the better-performing and more easily managed Power server in a Tailored Datacenter Integration (TDI) configuration (SAP TDI FAQ).

Stay tuned for more

I will discuss the movement of data into HANA 2.0 on IBM Power Systems little endian from all the different sources in an upcoming blog series. Please stay tuned!
