Next directions to accelerate cloud native

Containers are an increasingly important element in the design techniques for enterprises to develop and deliver applications and services with greater speed and agility as part of their cloud-native transformation. IBM Storage has taken a position in enabling the data management and protection of containers with open-source Kubernetes integrations. Leveraging IBM external storage solutions for hybrid multicloud workloads, IBM has been delivering container-centric solutions from DevOps to modern analytics and AI to blockchain and more, with our block, file and object storage offerings.  Today, IBM Storage is announcing plans[1] to add container-native software-defined storage (SDS) with our block (IBM Spectrum Virtualize), file (IBM Spectrum Scale), and object (IBM Cloud Object Storage) offerings.

IBM provides access to the platforms, tools and data management services to help clients leverage containers to accelerate innovation and shorten time to market. We have provided persistent multi-protocol storage using open-source Kubernetes integrations since 2017, we are adding support for CSI (container storage interface), and continue delivering broad data services for containers, such as data reduction, migration, encryption, multi-vendor virtualization and protection. IBM Storage is already helping companies in industries such as financial services, manufacturing, hospitality and healthcare to leverage IBM Cloud Private as an enterprise application development platform with IBM Power Systems, IBM Z, IBM LinuxONE RockHopper II and x86 systems. We help enable consistent data management and protection for your containerized and virtualized workloads, including dynamic storage provisioning to service classes and container-aware backup for MongoDB and IBM Db2, with additional capabilities and workloads planned1.

IBM container-native SDS builds on this leadership. And, as containers are doing for our clients’ cloud and DevOps environments, IBM container-native SDS is intended to help enable faster, more agile development of new storage and data management functionality by IBM, including support of new storage system platforms and memory technologies. It is designed to enhance clients’ deployment options with IBM Storage by further abstracting the storage function so it can run across on-premises and multicloud environments, in software, storage system, or cloud application offerings. IBM container-native SDS is also designed to help enable extreme cloud-native scale of managed entities and associated data services.
