For two years in a row, IBM has been recognized as a leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Distributed File Systems and Object Storage for both its completeness of vision and ability to execute in the fast growing scale-out storage market for unstructured data. The report evaluates our suite of products which include IBM Cloud Object Storage System™ and IBM Spectrum Scale™.   The Magic Quadrant report evaluated fifteen vendors, and IBM was one of only three vendors to be positioned in the leader quadrant.

The release of this report comes less than two weeks after IBM’s recent announcement of new storage economics and Write Once Read Many (WORM)-enabled vaults for its on-premises Cloud Object Storage System. IBM has made object storage much more accessible for clients with two new capabilities for workloads that require WORM storage and low-end starting configurations for new storage economics.

By 2021, more than 80% of enterprise data will be stored in scale-out storage systems in enterprise and cloud data centers, up from 30% today. – GARTNER

Today, as companies transform to include innovations such as cloud, mobile, the Internet of Things (IoT), social, analytics and cognitive, there is an explosive growth of content and a demand for more and more data storage. With the market for scale-out storage growing with no end in sight, IBM is well-positioned to address customer demand with two of the leading unstructured data solutions in the market.

IBM Cloud Object Storage System

The on-premises IBM Cloud Object Storage System is a breakthrough platform for storing large amounts of unstructured data. It is designed to provide scalability, availability, security and lower total cost of ownership (TCO).  It is available as an integrated storage system or as a software-only solution. In addition, IBM Cloud Object Storage is available as a public cloud service in the IBM Cloud. IBM Cloud Object Storage is ideal for use cases such as remote file collaboration, backup or archive repository, and as a content repository for images, video, and voice.

Customers can start with as few as three commodity X86 server nodes or as little as 72TB of useable storage and grow to petabytes or beyond. By combining a single copy of protected data and the ability to lock down data using Write-Once-Read-Many (WORM) storage, this solution is quickly becoming the choice for many industries like finance, healthcare and government that have compliance or other data retention requirements.

IBM Spectrum Scale

IBM Spectrum Scale is an enterprise-grade parallel file system that delivers highly scalable software-defined storage capacity and supreme performance for mission-critical data analytics and technical computing workloads in large, demanding environments.

IBM Spectrum Scale multi-protocol file access allows clients to transparently unify storage silos within a single namespace, including support for Hadoop environments and HDFS without requiring any changes to applications. The solution provides automated policy-based placement and migration of data across flash, disk, tape and cloud storage, allowing clients to balance performance and cost.

IBM Spectrum Scale has been meeting client storage management needs with peerless reliability for almost twenty years. In the words of Chris MacPhee, Operations Manager at the Queen’s University Centre for Advanced Computing in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, “Availability and reliability are key at CAC.  Bedside monitors, ground-breaking experiments, international collaboration portals – stopping the data flow is not an option.  We needed a software-defined storage solution we could trust.  IBM Spectrum Scale delivered.”
