Data protection in the new era of the data-driven economy

As I was following up on GDPR requirements and the implications, it got me thinking into what it means for traditional backup and data protection functions within IT organizations.

Up until now, data protection has been an important but often IT-level task. However, in the new data-driven economy, data protection is now a business objective, rather than an IT objective. The availability of new technology and the adoption of different deployment models is changing or adding to functional and non-functional requirements.

Some of the new criteria changing the protection paradigm are the demands for agility, reuse, productivity, security and automation. Organizations are embracing cloud in the pursuit of agility, and improved productivity (where obviously automation is key), and they are also concerned with security and integration back into business applications. Business leaders are making constant decisions around what needs to remain on premises and what can be moved to public cloud.

GDPR regulations

The regulations explained above play a key role in protecting organizational data. Organizational processes are being created to enforce these regulations, and still others are being adopted as best practices.

Some of the changing needs in data protection are:

  1. Continuous protection without invoking disaster recovery (DR).
  2. Backup of workloads on cloud as well as on premises, preferably with a uniform set of tools and without reinvention every time.
  3. Long-term retention to cloud.
  4. Backup data encryption at rest and in flight.

IBM Spectrum Protect Plus can improve the technical feasibility of the objectives listed above, especially for new-generation workloads and ones that utilize extensive server virtualization.

It is extremely simple to implement, supports instant backup and long-term retention on cloud, it is also available to for deployment on public cloud and allows for instant recovery and encryption. IBM Spectrum Protect Plus exploits advanced APIs from hypervisors to provide consistency and ensure that all of the advances in virtualization can be exploited by this backup software to protect data in a consistent way.

Spectrum Protect Plus gets integrated into IBM Spectrum Protect for enterprise-level features like integration into hybrid cloud and backup replication. Try our 30-day trial to simplify your data protection.
