It’s no surprise that SAP HANA is a resource-intensive workload that requires planning across your organization, from DevOps to infrastructure teams.

Last week at the IBM Think Conference in Las Vegas, IBM and SAP leaders talked about how our two companies are innovating together to reduce total cost of ownership and improving efficiency for clients deploying SAP HANA. To demonstrate this, Helge Tautorat (Director of IT, Richemont SA) joined Bob Picciano (SVP, IBM Cognitive Systems) and John Appleby (global head of DDM/HANA Centers of Excellence, SAP) on stage to describe a revolutionary approach to sharing resources across HANA production VMs. And that’s not the only example. For the past three years, SAP and IBM have helped over 1,000 clients implement SAP HANA on IBM Power Systems.

Together, IBM and SAP offer clients choice and flexibility. Now our clients can reach a new maximum of 16TB for SAP HANA BW in a single instance, giving them the ability to get more out of their business warehouse instances. This means that infrastructure leaders can focus on extracting insights from the data, rather than wasting time, resources and money managing dozens of small servers in a cluster. Now SAP HANA on Power Systems solutions can reach 256TB with just 16 LPARs, which enables clients to take advantage of the same built-in high availability of a cluster. Additionally, our solutions now include 24TB for S/4HANA, and we will look to expand beyond that with upcoming POWER9 systems to be released later this year.

Many of our clients are implementing a hybrid or multi-cloud strategy, and have been challenged by the lack of very large SAP HANA-managed cloud options. This meant that many were forced to run multiple HANA environments, making significant investments in their IT infrastructure to support large and concurrent workloads. To address this, IBM is introducing a new SAP-certified, Power Systems-enabled, IBM Cloud-managed application service for SAP HANA workloads, giving even the largest customers the capacity to reap the benefits of HANA’s in-memory analytics on the cloud.

In the future, we will continue to collaborate with SAP to bring revolutionary technology options to our clients such as non-volatile memory, more POWER9 based servers with new capabilities and the integration of HANA and our IBM PowerAI deep learning frameworks.
