As the current infrastructure metrics promoted by The Green Grid (PUE and DCiE) have become more widely adopted, questions have arisen as to how to interpret individual results, compare different results for the same data center, or compare results across different data centers. Additionally, as there are various ways to calculate results, stakeholders in the industry have expressed concerns around the consistency and repeatability of publicly reported measurements. The Green Grid is publishing a set of rules and guidelines and a required process that organizations should follow when making public claims as to PUE or DCiE measurements for their data centers. This includes the definition of standard nomenclature that will enable an individual claimant to communicate key information about their measurements. With proper and transparent public reporting guidelines and availability of key information about reported results, both the credibility and usefulness of these metrics will be enhanced.

Must keep energy balance

regarding kavi\arai's comments, if we include in-house generators, we must include the fuel source for that generator in order to keep the energy equations balanced. So, if one is running gas microturbines, then we must include the energy that enters the data center energy envelope as natural gas. If solar is included, the insolation energy must be counted in the total energy entering the system. So, while these could be included, The Green Grid has chosen, for simplicity, to exclude power generation or waste heat re-use in the calculation of PUE/DCIE.

Power Generator in the DC

The Guide line says that the PDU/DCiE does not include the power generator in the DC site to reduce complexity. It is good to know one aspect of the data center efficiency. However, the purpose of the activities are to reduce CO2. Therefore, solar panel or cogenaration system capability is recommended. One other reason is that these capability is one of the element of the DC when it is used for the DC operation. Therefore, in-house generator have to be included in the measurement. Or, the guide line refers some other document which includes total DC efficiency measurement which gives invenstment insentives for such generator.
