A sound investment: Improving energy efficiency in data centers

In the remaining weeks of the current session of the U.S. Congress, the Senate has the chance to advance bipartisan legislation that strives to combine both business and sustainability objectives. In seeking to boost energy efficiency while cutting costs within the federal government, the Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act of 2014, S. 1261, proposes several innovative measures specific to data centers that warrant close examination.

Examining data center power system harmonics | Cabling Installation & Maintenance

A recent white paper from The Green Grid examines data center power system harmonics and provides an overview of this phenomenon's effects on data center efficiency and reliability. "Harmonic currents can be a major factor in power quality and efficiency issues within a data center and can be a complex subject to understand," states the paper. "Power quality issues associated with alternating current (AC) power line harmonics.can distort the voltage that is being consumed by information technology (IT) equipment, thereby disrupting the operation of the equipment."

Energy metrics: No easy answers | IT BusinessEdge

One of the reasons energy conservation is such a hot button issue in the data center these days is that no one has a clear idea how to assess the situation. To be sure, metrics like PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) are a step in the right direction, but even its backers will admit that it is not a perfect solution and should not even be used to compare one facility against another. And as I pointed out last month, newer metrics like Data Center Energy Productivity (DCeP) provide a deeper dive into data operations but ultimately rely largely on subjective.

HPC power and cooling heat up | Scientific Computing

As of last summer, NRELs data center has been consuming just over one megawatt of power. But its in the winter that this system shines. Water to the servers is supplied at 75 degrees Fahrenheit and returned at 100 degrees Fahrenheit. ...HP and NREL are looking beyond achieving a favorable power usage effectiveness (PUE) the metric that measures data center power user efficiency. What Im pushing for is ERE energy reuse efficiency, he says. The heated water from the supercomputers cooling system acts as a furnace, heating the lab and offices and is even being channeled."

Delving into the energy/productivity conundrum | IT BusinessEdge

Anyone who has looked at the numbers realizes that the data center is between a rock and a hard place. Loads are going up, perhaps as much as 30 percent per year, while at the same time the cost of energy is on the rise now that the global economy seems to be on the mend. ... A task force consisting of representatives from The Green Grid, the U.S. Department of Energy and various European and Asian government agencies recently unveiled their latest tool, the Data Center Energy Productivity (DCeP) metric , which promises to delve deeper into energy usage in data environments and whether it is being put to good use.

Measuring the work your datacenter does | ZDNet

While there have been many advances in technology and process that have resulted in the ability to create a datacenter that was more energy efficient, the bottom line has always been that the datacenter still needs to get work done. And a true metric of efficiency needs to be aware of the workload and provide some evaluative method that defines the efficiency of the datacenter in the simple model of comparing what goes in to what comes out. After five years of work, a global taskforce has released their final set of recommendations. ...Their final result is the Data Center Energy Productivity (DCeP) metric which is designed to provide a quantifiable measure of the amount of work a given datacenter is accomplishing.

Free cooling geography | AnandTech

... All you need is...a mild climate. But do we really need to guarantee a rather low 20-25C inlet temperature for our IT equipment all year round? It is a very important question as the temperature in large parts of the worlds can be cooled with free cooling if the server inlet temperature does not need to be so low. The Green Grid , a non-profit organization, uses data from the Weatherbank to calculate the amount of time that a data center can use air-side "free cooling" to keep the inlet temperature below 35C. To make this more visual, they publish the data in a colorful way.

3 key guidelines to help increase energy efficiency in the data center | TechRepublic

Nobody needs to tell you that energy efficiency is at the top of the data centers to-do list. Every data center is looking to cut power consumption while maintaining the highest level of service. But achieving real energy efficiency is easier said than done. While increasing energy efficiency has been a growing initiative in data centers across the country, largely due to demands to “do more with less” in a challenging economy, an amalgamation of myths related to data center “greening” and a general lack of understanding of how to approach and achieve it has had a significant negative impact on the universal adoption of true “green IT” practices.
