2013 Forum - Built to Last: A Review of NRI’s New “Double Deck Data Center”

In October 2012, Nomura Research Institute opened its newest data center in Tokyo, Japan. This session will examine the data center’s innovative “double deck floor” design, which will help reduce overall air handling and facility electricity needs. As a result, it is anticipated that neither additional building side modifications nor further capital spending will be needed for 30 to 40 years or maybe even longer.

2013 Forum - Current and Short-Term Projected State of EU CoC

This session will explore the European Commission's Code of Conduct on Data Centers, which is comprised of a series of voluntary, light-touch measures. This session will examine how these measures can help operators improve the energy efficiency of their data centers. In addition, these measures could contribute to forming the basis of more stringent legislation in the future. However, other challenges related to local legal frameworks and energy policies will have to be addressed first.

2013 Forum - Data Center Power System Harmonics: An Overview of the Effects on Data Center Efficiency and Reliability

Data center managers are often requesting lower harmonics numbers, but they do not always understand what the appropriate numbers are and why. Zero harmonics does not necessarily mean a better data center operating environment. This session will help attendees understand how to balance harmonics and efficiency, while providing a general overview of harmonics, including what they are and what they do.

2013 Forum - European Perspectives in Addressing Sustainability in Data Centers

This session will look at the European Commission’s effort to address the growth in data centers focuses on their overall resource efficiency and environmental footprint. The development and use of relevant international standards and metrics is considered essential, but not sufficient to achieve improved efficiency. This session will also address the challenges of maintaining data centers in urban settings, where competition for resources and pressures to reduce GHG emissions is greatest.

2013 Forum - Green Carrots - An Examination of the Effectiveness of Energy Incentive Programs

Are utility incentives making the ‘grid’ any greener? Recent management theory suggests that “incentives don’t work,” yet utility rebate programs subsidize corporate energy efficiency investments with millions of ratepayer dollars each year. The Green Grid is currently studying the influence of utility incentives on the IT industry, and this interactive session will offer a first look at the results of this first-of-its-kind research. Audience input will be collected during the session and may be incorporated into the upcoming publication on this interesting topic area.

2013 Forum - IT Recycling Metric

This presentation will introduce the audience to EDE, and why it is important. It will also provide initial guidance as to how it can be calculated and guidelines for its use. Last, it will cover suggested next steps as well as issue a call-to-action for organizations interested in piloting the new metric.
