Technology & Strategy Work Group

Officers

  • The Technology & Strategy Work Group has two elected positions. They are currently held by:
    • Chair: Mike Patterson, Intel
    • Vice-Chair: John Bean, Schneider Electric

Charter

  • Mission Statement
    • The Technology and Strategy Work Group will improve data center efficiency by:
      • developing, evaluating, and analyzing existing and emerging technologies and strategies that affect resource consumption, and
      • educating the data center community on technologies and strategies that affect resource consumption
  • Structure
    • The Technology and Strategy Work Group reports to the Technical Committee. This Work Group may include Task Forces and Sub Work Groups that report by dotted line to the Data Center Design Guide Work Group.
  • Scope
    • The Technology and Strategy Work Group will evaluate technologies that have an effect on data center resource efficiency. The Technology and Strategy Work Group may focus on equipment, sub-systems, or the data center as a single-system.
    • The Technology and Strategy Work Group will evaluate the effects of operational strategies on data center power consumption.
    • The Technology and Strategy Work Group will develop tools that help model / estimate the effects of technology policies and decisions on data center resource efficiency.
    • The Technology and Strategy Work Group may make technical recommendations based on its evaluations and analyses. These may include guidance related to widespread adoption (i.e. Gap Analyses), and guidance on areas for potential future development and research
    • The Technology and Strategy Work Group may focus on any equipment or systems within the data center.
  • Criteria for Success
    • Member participation
    • Downloads of completed deliverables; education modules created; number of modules completed by public and member participants
    • Industry awareness and adoption of technologies and strategies that affect data center resource efficiency
    • Number of deliverables by other Work Groups that leverage work completed by the Technology and Strategy Work Group 
  • Deliverables
    • The Technology and Strategy Work Group shall develop white papers and may deliver tools, presentations and other technical communication based on technical studies and other technical knowledge.
    • The Technology and Strategy Work Group may develop education modules as appropriate to explain and promote specific technologies or strategies 
    • The Technology and Strategy Work Group may propose Technical Committee activity requests for other Work Groups as required to advance particular technologies or strategies
  • Internal Collaboration
    • The Technology and Strategy Work Group will provide support to other Work Groups as required.
    • The Technology and Strategy Work Group will rely on ongoing liaisons with groups external to The Green Grid to ensure the deliverables reflect the needs of end-users, the general membership and the industry, and will support The Green Grid’s Communications Committee to ensure alignment of message, speaker support and support of other regional groups.
    • The Technology and Strategy Work Group may leverage the general membership for additional non-voting participants as required to develop and produce approved deliverables.
  • About the Group
    • Typical Meeting Schedules
      • The full WG meets monthly for status meetings, updates from the Sub Work Groups, and general Technical Committee updates. The Sub Work Groups and Task Forces meet as needed, but historically this has been on a weekly basis.
    • Communication Mechanisms
      • The primary full Work Group communications method is through the monthly Work Group status meeting. Other email traffic is generated as needed. The Sub Work Groups and Task Forces meet with sufficient frequency that the working meetings are the primary communications path, augmented by Sub Work Group/Task Force Chairs e-mail as required.
    • Level of involvement
      • Group members are expected to actively participate in the Sub Work Group and Task Force conference calls. Techncial Committee Face-to-Face attendance is encouraged. Additionally, group members participate actively in the creation of the Technical Work Group’s work products via Task Force participation and/or direct contribution to work creation. All members are responsible for representing their corporations in the review and balloting processes.
