The Green Grid has developed the Data Center Maturity Model (DCMM) and supporting white paper  to outline capability descriptors by area such that users can benchmark their current performance, determine their levels of maturity, and identify the ongoing steps and innovations necessary to achieve greater energy efficiency and sustainability, both today and into the future.  The maturity model touches upon every aspect of the data center including power, cooling, compute, storage and network. The levels of the model outline current best practices and a 5-year roadmap for the industry.

Cooling Problems

Hi Phil - thank you for your comment. The task force did not ignore the fact that there are other ways of cooling. We actually want to encourage innovation and left the door wide open for that to happen whether it is liquid cooling or any other type of cooling you and the industry can think of. If you look at the cooling section of the model: 2.3 - "Mechanical/Refrigerant Cooling reduction" - The no mechanical/refrigerant cooling stipulates the number of hours you do not use mechanical/refrigerant cooling regardless of the cooling method - you decide - air, water, liquid, an army of men with straws, a new innovation, etc. I would welcome further input - please come and join the Task Force within The Green Grid.

Cooling Problems

Basic physics demonstrates that air is a highly inefficient coolant. The volume of air needed to carry away 1 unit of heat is 5500 times larger than that needed for a direct touch refrigerant based system. Such a system was demonstrated to be superior to every other cooling system recently tested during chill-off 2. There are also several other non air cooled systems being introduced including those from "Green Revolution" and Hard Core Cooling" In spite of this the authors of the maturity model totally ignore these advances. This raises serious questions value of this document.
