Company
Overview: Automatic Data
Processing (ADP), with nearly $8 billion in revenues and over 600,000 clients,
is a substantial provider of business outsourcing solutions.Leveraging more than 55 years of experience,
ADP offers the widest range of HR, payroll, tax and benefits administration
solutions from a single source.ADP is
also a provider of integrated computing solutions to auto, truck, motorcycle,
marine and recreational vehicle dealers throughout the world. For more information, visit:http://www.adp.com
Current
Focus: For the last several
years ADP has been reducing costs and improving service by centralizing its
mission-critical data processing operations. This has enabled the adoption of Green Technology innovations, through
which ADP is reducing its data center power and cooling requirements as it
increases the efficiency, flexibility, and reliability of its systems.Through this strategy, ADP has:
Shifted focus from gigahertz to
multi-core power-efficient servers
Used ADP's industry influence
to help vendors shift their focus from power to efficiency
Dramatically increased system
resource utilization through server virtualization and consolidation
Increased processing density
and simplified connectivity with blade technology
Addressed rapid growth of disk
storage needs by introducing tiered storage and starting to leverage
de-duplication technology.
ADP is currently
working on the following GreenDataCenter
initiatives:
A truly virtual data center
Solid state disk storage
Power-efficient network devices
Next-generation video
conference solutions to reduce travel
Exploration of wind, solar, and
heat exchange alternative power solutions.
Since the Data Center
Consolidation initiative began in late 2006, ADP has reduced the number of
production data center facilities by 90%, reduced data center floor space by
75%, and reduced electrical consumption by 54%, producing yearly savings of $3
million in electricity costs and 24,000 tons reduction in CO2 emissions per
year.
As the ADP business
continues to grow, our three year objective is to maintain the same or better
data center carbon footprint. As part of
this effort, ADP joined The Green Grid as a Contributor Member in January 2008.
BT
Company Overview: BT is a
global provider of communication solutions and services operating in 170
countries. Their principal activities include networked IT services, local,
national and international telecommunications services, and higher-value
broadband and internet products and related services. BT consists principally

Current
Focus: BT has been
a Contributor Member of The Green Grid since its inception. They are undertaking
a number of different initiatives to improve energy efficiency in the data center
including server virtualization, consolidation, technology refresh and removing
servers that are not adding value to the company. BT is regularly
monitoring and trending the PUE and DCiE metrics to measure the M&E
overhead related to the data centers and has also implemented free air cooling,
raised ambient temperature and installed hot/cold air segregation at some sites.BT has undertaken
carbon assessments of their data centers which provide detailed views of the
carbon associated with operating BT’s data centers and highlight the
inefficiency opportunities. BT is actively
looking at DC power, Fresh Air cooling and other cutting edge technologies to reduce
energy consumption in the data center and is working with a number of different
organizations to reach their goals such as The Green Grid, ETNO, and EU Code of
Conduct for Data Centers.
